A native of northeast Pennsylvania, Susan Sponenberg made horse a part of her life at an early age. When she completed her studies at the Maryland Institute College Of Art, she studied at the Porlock Vale Riding School in England. There she began her career as a portrait artist. Today she is currently head of the Art Department at Lucerne College.
